Film Friday In the movie Disclosure Day weather presenter Maggie begins to discover that she can see into other people’s lives, giving them advice about what they should do. She sees beyond the front they present and can perceive their deeper needs and desires. She doesn’t know how she does it, and that is revealed as the story progresses.
It reminded me of the way Jesus saw into the lives of those he met. When he looked at the bumbling and impetuous Peter he saw something more, a rock for founding his church. When he looked at Mary on resurrection day he didn’t see a second class citizen, as others did, he saw a woman who could bring the good news to the rest of the world. When he saw a despised tax collector called Zacchaeus he saw a man hungry for change, and when he looked at the restless crowds he saw a people who were lost and needed a caring shepherd to guide them.
And so it is today.
When Jesus looks at us he understands us, he sees beyond the front we present to the world, beyond the hurts and wounds inflicted upon us by a damaged world, he sees the person he has made, he sees our hopes and dreams, our needs and potential. He understands us and longs that we bring all we are to him. Not just the shiny bits but the deeper parts, the real bits of our lives. We need never fear being honest with Jesus, he welcomes truth and reality, and he understands us and can help us with our troubles and struggles.
