Dave Hop Glenn Holland is a composer who longs to write a masterpiece. While he struggles to do this he also works as a high school music teacher. But that is not his dream, his dream is to create his opus. However while his mind is set on doing that great thing, he misses the greater things happening around him. The miracles of encouragement and tuition that he performs every day.
I recently wrote a story about someone waiting all day for a selfie with a famous film director. While he waited he met all kinds of people and for a few moments shared life with them. He never did get his famous selfie, but he did other things instead. We probably all aspire to greatness, whether it be financially, achieving great things, winning things, becoming famous etc. And yet, to misquote John Lennon, life is going on around us while we have our heads in another place.
Jesus’s set of priorities was groundbreaking. He spent his time with the ‘little people’ creating his masterpieces every day in the lives of folk like us. Leading us to see the small and the weak and the least and the last and the slowest and the poor as the most precious. Success means something different to our God. Why else would he choose to change the world via a despised and despicable cross of execution. His ways are not ours, but we can keep on rediscovering those ways as we venture through this kingdom of wonder and compassion.
