We may build our towers and reach for the sky,
We may think our achievements so splendidly high,
Yet our meagre skyscrapers never come near
To the realm of the one who has come down here.
Building upwards with our egos of stone,
Desperate to prove we can make it alone,
The one we are trying to disprove sees it all,
And in response he makes himself small.
Turns on its head the idea of great,
Gives humble strength to those who wait,
Not to the fast or the proud or the strong,
His presence is wrapped in a cradle song.
When the towers we build come crashing down,
As we fall on our knees our world turns around,
And the effort we put into conquering all,
Is turned upside-down when we find ourselves small,
Knowing we’re poor in spirit and size,
We find our true selves in the maker’s eyes.
‘Let’s build a great city with a tower that reaches to the skies – a monument to our greatness!’
