In the film Wonder, Auggie is born looking different from most people. When he struggles at school with other children avoiding him and calling him ugly he understandably begins to fall apart. One day his mum comes into his room and tells him he is not ugly, and anyone who gets to know him will see that. But Auggie tells her that she only says that because she’s his mum. ‘Does it matter less that I say that because I’m your mother? No,’ she says, ‘it matters more.’
There’s a verse in Song of Songs that I have come to love. It’s in chapter 2 and verse 14. And it talks about us hiding behind our rocks, and a voice beckoning us out saying, ‘I want to see your face and hear your voice, because your voice is wonderful and you are lovely.’ We can all of us feel ugly at times, especially when we compare ourselves to the glossy images on our screens. But these words from Song of Songs matter way more than any other opinion, because they come from our good and caring heavenly father. He made us and he knows us better than anyone else. And in his eyes we are never ugly or unlovable. We are precious and unique and do not need to try and blend in or conform to the world’s opinions.
It’s hard to see this truth at times, but Jesus spent his life on earth embracing those who others rejected and judged. He had come to help those that the world classed as ugly. Here’s a prayer for you – Lord help us today to see this reality again, that we are your beloved children. And in you we find our true identity. And help us please to see others as you see them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
