Magician Stanley is expert at exposing fake mediums. When he hears about Sophie he is determined to expose her. However, the more time he spends with her the more uncertain he becomes. There are many discussions in this film about whether this life is all there is, Stanley believes there is nothing more.
Stanley describes himself as a rational man and therefore believes everything can be explained in logical terms. But many rational people trust in God. And we all know that there are many aspects of life which cannot be explained away. Life can sometimes be a tale of the unexpected, with moments of mystery. Tom Shadyac, the director of Bruce Almighty and Evan Almighty once said that he believed coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.
Time and again the writers of the Bible encourage us to trust in God, to look to him for direction, purpose and meaning. This is not always easy when we want more concrete evidence and assurance. Especially in times of difficulty. The prophet Isaiah describes the God who will be with us through all kinds of trouble. “Don’t be afraid, for I’ve ransomed you. I’ve called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the LORD, your God, your saviour.’
