Wednesday Riff: Surely

Jacob woke from his dream of angels and said,
‘Surely God is in this place and I never knew it.’
He was on the run and thought he was alone
‘Surely God is in this place and I never knew it.’
When I walk down the street at times something reminds me
‘Surely God is in this place and I never knew it.’

When I sail close to the wind and founder I’m reminded
‘Surely God is in this place and I never knew it.’
When I’m wandering in the darkness, lost again in despair
‘Surely God is in this place and I never knew it.’
When we find ourselves up against a wall, cornered by life
‘Surely God is in this place and we never knew it.’

When we feel alone and rejected and we need a friend
‘Surely God is in this place and I never knew it.’
When we hurl ourselves towards temptation and danger
‘Surely God is in this place and we never knew it.’
When we box God and confine him to heaven
‘Surely God is in this place and we never knew it.’

When the pub’s almost full and the church almost empty
‘Surely God is in this place and we never knew it.’
And as a carpenter dies in shame and rejection, abandoned by the world
‘Surely God is in this place and we never knew it.’
