Jesus drinks the sour wine of our shame;
Drinks deeply of it, drinks it down and absorbs it.
Mysterious and bitter, the poison that contaminates,
Seeps into our being and corrodes
Our gifts, our hope, our laughter and caring.
He drinks the sour wine, drains the cup,
And somewhere behind the pain and insults,
There’s an echo of extraordinary words,
‘If the son sets you free you shall be free indeed.’
He drinks the sour wine.
Willingly. For us.
Luke 23 vv 32-36
