A reading based on the words of Isaiah 61 vv 1-4 and Luke 4 vv 14-21.
Jesus looked at the faces before him.
A crowd of questioning, hopeful, wondering, curious, doubtful, critical, peaceful, restless, hurting people – the strong and the weak.
He smiled at them, lifted Isaiah’s words and made them his own:
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
He has chosen me and sent me to bring good news to the poor –
To take His love, and new life to those who have no hope.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives.
To break the chains of poverty, riches, loneliness and sin.
To bring recovery of sight to the blind,
Healing for the sick, strength for the faint
And purpose for the lost.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon you,
Because he has chosen those who are broken,
Those who are incomplete,
Those who are inadequate,
To be a signpost
And to show the world – the way home.’
Then he smiled again, rolled up the words of Isaiah and began to live them out.
