Film Friday Thought: Slumdog Millionaire

I love the moment in this film when Jamal, having jumped into a latrine pit filled with… well, you can guess… then pushes his way through a horrified crowd to get the autograph of a big movie star. The movie star doesn’t bat an eyelid and simply signs his name for a delighted, and sticky, Jamal. It reminds me of the time Jesus met a rejected and marginalised woman in a crowd, and rather than let her slip quietly away, drew her out in order to look her in the eyes and show her how valued she was, and how precious to God. Even though others were embarrassed about her, Jesus was not. He wanted to restore her dignity and humanity after years of struggle and hurt. I love that.
