Our Nature

I’m feeling a bit left out, said the sky,
the clouds nodded, ‘We know what you mean,
we used to be so interesting, but
we’ve been upstaged by a screen.’

The bushes and the trees agreed,
the flowers said, ‘You’re not alone,
creation once held centre stage,
but less so since the mobile phone.’

Earth’s crammed with heaven,
every common bush and tree,
those noticing take off their shoes,
the rest just take a selfie.

With reference to:

‘And every common bush afire with God,
But only he who sees takes off his shoes;
The rest sit round and pluck blackberries.’
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
