Years ago, back in the 1980s, the Deetz family moved into a spooky old house and – surprise surprise – found it haunted, with as they say in filmland – ‘hilarious consequences’ – something which depends on your sense of humour of course! Like the first film (Beetlejuice) this sequel is set in two worlds, this life and the afterlife, and the character featured in the title is a ghost who will wreak all kinds of mischief on the family – if they say his name three times. It’s a tale full of quirky jokes around the undead.
The unknown has always fascinated us, and questions about the great beyond. The wonderful thing about Jesus is that he brings us assurance about the next world. The folk in New testament times were looking for the new age, the new kingdom, and Jesus ushered that in with his arrival. It was a new age that begins in this world and continues forever into the next. And Jesus is the one who can open up that world for us. He holds the keys of life and death. ‘Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last.’ Jesus tells us in Revelation chapter 1 v 17-18. ‘I am the living one who died. Look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.’ He comes with the keys to unlock us, to bring us hope in this life and for the next. He is the one who knows what forever looks like and as we follow him, little by little, we discover what life is all about.
