It Ends With Us

When Lily Bloom spots a young homeless man, called Atlas, in a derelict building across her street she packs up some food and a sleeping bag and leaves it outside his boarded window. She later gets to know him and he eventually tells her that she saved his life when she showed him that kindness. He later shows her kindness too when she needs help. At one point, in Matthew 7 v 12, when Jesus was telling others about the kingdom of God he quoted what is known as the Golden Rule – do to other people what you would like them to do to you. He said this summed up all the teaching in the law. Lily had no idea how much help Atlas need when she came to his rescue, and it’s true that we often don’t know what people are going through.

Sometimes a smile shared can change a person’s view of the world and themselves. We live in an age of bad news and blame, and so treating others with the care and grace that we would like to receive is no bad thing. And every good thing we do for someone else, no matter how small or large, expresses the love of God, as he shines through us to the world around. In Philippians 2 v 15 Paul encourages us to ‘Shine like stars lighting up the sky.’ Lord, even if we are not aware of it, please shine out of us today as we go about our normal living.

If you've appreciated this, why not...
