Drawing on Numbers 21 vv 4-9, John 3 vv 14-21
Jesus looks at Nicodemus with compassion in his eyes,
And his mind wanders back to that story he knows so well.
Moses, that great man in the wilderness,
And a people full of pain.
Snake bites and rebellion, trouble and despair.
And guided by his God, Moses crafts a way out,
Something physical, something real,
A symbol of the present and healing God,
A version of the very thing that is hurting them.
A bronze snake lifted up,
The problem right there, raised high,
And all who look to it would live.
And so Jesus smiles and tells this man,
Who is longing for a new start,
That he will be lifted up, raised high,
A version of the very thing that is hurting the world.
Something physical, something real,
A symbol of the present and healing God.
The problem right there, lifted high,
A cross of pain and loss, trouble and death.
And all who look to it will live,
And find a fresh beginning.
Just like being born all over again.
New life, new hope.
