We all get discipled.
By experience, habits, peer pressure, hurts, triumphs , disasters, failures, advice, warnings, authority figures, the media, misunderstanding, gossip, rumours, fears, regrets, aspirations, goals, culture, ambition…
The list goes on.
We are surrounded by a huge jostling crowd of things that steer our lives one way then another.
We all get discipled.
Steered, manoeuvred, guided, shaped, shoved, pulled, pushed. This way and that.
Trying to please, to achieve, to climb that mountain, to just keep going, to be better, to not be worse, to impress, to fight on, to do better, to impress, to look strong, to appear cool, to outdo those who would put us down.
We all get discipled.
One man spoke to the little people, the rebels, the mavericks, the misguided, the marginalised, the de-motivated, the oppressed, the overlooked, the weak, the grieving, the disappointed, the forgotten, those who would never amount to much, the uncool, the broken, those lost in a fog…
And discipled them in a whole new way. A way that sidestepped the usual pressures. One that liberated them from all that would hold them down and push them back. A liberating kind of discipling, not dependant on the ways of the world and the pressure to conform.
The kind of discipling that set them free and satisfied their deepest longings.
We all get discipled.
Surrounded by a huge jostling crowd of things that steer our lives one way then another.
There is another way.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11 28-30, The Message Bible
