Film Friday Furiosa is escaping from the evil clutches of the sadistic tyrant Immortan Joe. She is also helping his ‘wives’ escape too. They had been kept as slaves to bear Joe’s children. Now, as they follow the Fury Road, they are pursued not only by Joe and his men, but other forces too, from Gas Town and Bullet Farm. So much is thrown at them as they travel it’s a wonder that any of them survive. Here’s a rare quiet moment from this raucous, oil-soaked, action-packed film. A conversation between Furiosa and Max.

Revelation 12 depicts an action-packed scene of daring escape. What Philip Yancey calls ‘the other side of Christmas’. A woman gives birth to a child, one who is destined to bring redemption to the whole world, but she is pursued by a murdrous dragon into the desert. It’s only by the grace of God that the woman and her child survive and escape. In his first letter Peter writes this, ‘Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour.’ Reminding us that this life is a kind of battlefield, and to follow Jesus draws into some sort of engagement in that battle.
I’m no Mad Max or Furiosa, so for me the battling is about doing the small things to make a difference, to make the world a little better, and even those small acts often require me to seriously pluck up my courage. Like Furiosa we’re all looking for redemption, many of us finding it in Jesus, the child once pursued by the dragon. And like Furiosa taking the five ‘wives’ with her as she makes her bid for freedom, we are invited to help others as we follow the way to life. And though we may still find this life to be a place of troubles and battles, we know that Jesus has overcome evil, not by the use of guns, grenades and flame-throwers, but by an all-together more powerful weapon.
