Take Up

Jesus invites us to take up our cross
and follow him,
But he also invites us to take up his yoke –
His ways of comfort and challenge,
His perspective, his rhythms of life, his outlook.
Crosses and yokes, challenges and comfort.
Finding ourselves in him, keeping company with him,
Heartening and hopeful,
A way of life on a narrow road,
A way of life that is good and uplifting,
A burden that is lifegiving and light,
his way is gentle and humble
and he offers us rest for our souls.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11 v 28-30 from The Message
