What If… The Prodigal (Luke chapter 15 v 11-32)

Having run away from home, lost all his money and ended up destitute  the younger brother finally came to his senses, and he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired men have food enough to spare, and here I am, dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’
So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son…’ The father stopped him and said, ‘Quick, bring a ring and the best robe… my son was lost…’ But the younger brother said, ‘Stop! I don’t deserve this, I’m not worth of being your child. Let me work and earn your blessing.’ But the father said, ‘No! I love you my child and always have done. We must celebrate your return…’ But the son said, ‘No! I don’t deserve it.’ And his father said, ‘I love you and always will.’ And the son said, ‘No I don’t deserve it.’ And his father said, ‘I love you and always will.’ And the son said, ‘No I don’t deserve it.’ And his father said, ‘I love you and always will.’ And the son said, ‘No I don’t deserve it.’ And his father said, ‘I love you and always will.’ And the son said, ‘No I don’t deserve it.’ And this went on for a long time. Meanwhile the older brother heard this and came to see what was happening. When he heard the argument he said to his younger brother, ‘Absolutely. I have to earn it, why shouldn’t you?’ And the two walked away, while the father followed them with his heart full of love and forgiveness, hoping that one day the penny would drop.
See how much the father has loved us,
his love is so great that we’re called God’s children. 1 John 3 v 1
