The Stones
As Jesus and his disciples reached the place where the road started down from the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.
‘Bless the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in highest heaven!’
Some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, ‘Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!’ They were concerned that the city might become a riot.
But they needn’t have worried. The people were distracted, looking down instead of up. Walking with their faces peering at little stone screens in their hands, playing first century online games and talking to someone other than the people they were with, missing what was happening around them.
And Jesus said, ‘Even if the people keep quiet, the very stones will burst into cheers!’
But they didn’t because it was these stones that had been turned into weapons of mass distraction, offering the people little surges of empty excitement, as they meandered through the news feed on their Face Scroll pages, finding things they could get annoyed about. And when Jesus saw the crowds looking so lost, he began to cry.
