A rewrite of a story about Jesus for discussion and reflection.
The Nine
As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. As he entered a village there, ten lepers stood at a distance, crying out, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’
He looked at them and said, ‘Go show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, their leprosy disappeared. When they saw they were healed, nine of the ten came back to Jesus, shouting, ‘Praise God, we’re healed!’ They fell face down on the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done.
Jesus said, ‘That was quick!’
And they said, ‘Oh we haven’t been to the priest yet, we wanted to come back and thank you first.’
And Jesus said, ‘Ah! No, go and get yourselves the proper paperwork first, you might still be a bit unclean, and I don’t want that rubbing off on me. Go and get yourselves tidied up and change your old clothes. I don’t want to be seen hanging around with undesirables, it won’t do my reputation any good at all. And weren’t there ten of you? Where’s the other one?’
‘He hasn’t come back,’ they said. ‘He was a Samaritan.’
‘Probably just as well,’ said Jesus, ‘no one round here likes Samaritans, and it wouldn’t do my profile much good. Now off you go and make yourself decent and presentable and then if you’re lucky I might decide to be your friend.’
