Those night lights keep speaking,
Leading, guiding, predicting, assuring.
For Abraham, a regular sign of the promise of God,
his plans and presence and purpose.
For David, forever looking at the sky
To remind himself (and us) of the Maker
of worlds and people, bestowing honour
laced with precious grace upon us.
Isaiah, reminding us with a question,
who made those lights, who made us?
Who names them and knows us intimately?
And those weary, savvy travellers,
arriving late and visiting the wrong king,
but in the end following that wandering star
as it led them to a king born in normality,
leading them to kneel in dust and history.
