Dave Hop In the movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Gandalf travels to Dol Guldur and engages the Necromancer in a fierce battle. As the conflict rages the Necromancer hisses at Gandalf: ‘There is no light, Wizard, that can defeat darkness.’ This put me in mind of a phrase at the start of John’s blog about Jesus. ‘The light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never extinguish it.’ (John 1 v 5) John claims that the Necromancer is wrong. Darkness cannot overcome light. And reality bears this out. Light a small candle in a dark room and no matter how dark the room and how dim the candle, you will still see a form of light there. Darkness does not possess the breath or the damp fingers to snuff out the candle.
Jesus described himself and his followers as being like lights for a dark world. You could say people are like mirrors, reflecting the light of God. As such we may be dim, dusty and cracked. We may see ourselves as floodlights, flashlights, sparklers or tiny matches. But however weak or strong, clear or dim, we can all carry something of God’s light into each day.
